"From nothing to over ¥100 million?" What money story sits behind the glossy AV world?

A lot of people watching them on screen have wondered: how much do they actually make? Right?

In reality, the women who turn real sex into a job — at the cost of privacy and dignity — earn far more than most people assume.

After digging through the numbers, we found that top actresses earn amounts that are hard to believe.

So this time we are laying out the latest estimated annual income ranking of popular AV actresses — TOP 10.

These numbers are for the curious, and for anyone thinking about the business. See what these women are actually worth.

(1) What sets an AV actress's yearly income? It is fee × number of shoots

This is going to be blunt. These are estimates. The real numbers can sit well above or below what we write here.

We only count money from shooting AV. In short, fee per title × titles in a year. Some actresses make more from side work.

As background: AV fees have dropped a lot. There was a time a single disc sold for over ¥10,000 (about HK$500), and the number of titles keeps rising. That was inevitable.

Exclusive actress fees run from ¥300,000 (about HK$15,000) to ¥1,000,000 (about HK$50,000)! Average about ¥700,000 (about HK$35,000)

AV actresses fall into three tiers. The top tier is the exclusive actress, signed to one studio.

Studios with exclusive actresses put out a new title for each of them every month. That fee is basically their monthly pay.

Today, ¥700,000 to ¥1,000,000 a month after tax already counts as doing well. Some sign exclusive deals around ¥300,000 per title just to hold the "exclusive" title. At that rate they are not far from a normal office job.

There used to be talk of an actress making ¥3,000,000 (about HK$150,000). That is a distant dream now. Famous names sit around ¥1,000,000; an average of about ¥700,000 is the realistic mark.

A few top names are the exception. Huge fame, an AV actress-of-the-year award, a former entertainer background, and strong sales can push a fee to ¥2,000,000 (about HK$100,000).

Planning-single actress fees run from ¥40,000 (about HK$2,000) to ¥300,000 (about HK$15,000)! Average about ¥200,000 (about HK$10,000)

Actresses not locked to one studio, who can shoot for many labels, are called planning-single actresses. They can do different genres, and they can also do solo titles.

They are no longer tied to one place. They shoot what they are offered, so pay shifts from a monthly deal to a per-job rate. If the name is hot, the bookings can spike, and income can jump past the exclusive era.

With the stamina, a planning-single actress can keep shooting. A strong one can do close to 10 titles a month. Average fee is said to be about ¥200,000, so volume can beat an exclusive deal.

Planning actress fees run from ¥40,000 (about HK$2,000) to ¥100,000 (about HK$5,000)! Average about ¥70,000 (about HK$3,500)

The third tier is the planning actress, or amateur actress. They are close to amateurs. Some treat it as a side gig. Most of the work only circulates online, with no clear release channel.

A planning actress usually gets only a few tens of thousands of yen. ¥100,000 a title means the scene was hardcore, or she is already rated at planning-single level.

Think about it: shoot AV, have it spread online, and walk away with a few tens of thousands of yen. That is very little. Still, some famous names started here. Plenty of girls use it as a stepping stone.

(2) Some AV actresses make serious extra money from YouTube, clothing brands, and more

These figures are rough, but they are real enough. AV actresses are not civil servants, so side work is allowed. Even an exclusive actress, after one monthly title and promo, still has free days.

Most AV actresses are said to have other work. Here are the five most common side incomes.

Side income 1: modelling and entertainment work

Events are a standard way to raise a name. Some skip promo to stay anonymous. Hot planning-single and exclusive actresses almost all do events.

Adult livestream shows have exploded. Some actresses even appear on late-night TV. A shonen magazine is hard. A seinen magazine gravure is realistic. The line with gravure idols and cosplayers is almost gone.

Most AV actresses belong to an agency. T-Powers and Mine'S are well-known names. The agency manages them like entertainers, and takes its cut of the fee.

Side income 2: YouTube and social media

Unlike events, which go through the agency, this is personal side work. It fits an era full of freelancers.

YouTube and TwitCasting livestreams are the obvious ones. Unpai and Kanae Otori are examples of streamers who crossed into AV, and some keep streaming after debut.

A bigger Twitter or Instagram following can pay too, through beauty and fashion posts.

Since 1 October 2023, stealth marketing has been tightly regulated in Japan. Using socials this way has got harder.

Side income 3: fan clubs and Fantia

If an actress wants to earn like an entertainer, a fan club is part of the package.

A fan club can add up: ¥10,000 a year × 1,000 members = ¥10,000,000. It takes work, but many top names run one.

More actresses now run paid memberships on socials, or use Fantia.

Fantia is built for paying members and allows very explicit content, so it suits AV actresses.

Side income 4: overseas adult events

Japanese AV is popular worldwide, and overseas events have grown with it.

The boom is especially strong in Asia. Famous Japanese actresses now fly out for these events.

"This event started in 2017. It stopped from 2020 to 2022 because of COVID, so this was the fourth edition after a four-year gap. 47 actresses attended, a record. About 50,000 visitors a day, 150,000 over three days."

The biggest is TRE in Taiwan, which can pull in hundreds of thousands of visitors.

The cheapest ticket is said to be about ¥5,000. A luxury ticket that includes time with the actresses costs several times that.

Overseas work also brings tips, and the weak yen makes it even more attractive. Expect more of these jobs.

Side income 5: hostess clubs and the sex industry

Hostess clubs and sex-industry work are common side jobs now. As AV pay has tightened, more actresses take them.

Many hostess-club actresses do not hide it. Shinjuku Red Dragon is a favourite. Active exclusive actresses work there, and some post their shifts on socials.

Sex-industry side work is rarer for studio exclusives, but it depends on the shop. High-end places such as Aoyama's Toranoana or Yoshiwara soaplands have hosted exclusive-level names.

(3) Estimated annual income ranking of AV actresses, TOP 10

Now the main event: the estimated annual income ranking.

We used last year's title count — or the final year for retired names — to estimate exclusive-actress income. Adding freelance shoots would make the math messy, so this list is exclusives only.

As said above, side work can change the total-income order. Treat this as a guide to main AV income, not a full tax return.

A rare planning-single name who kept shooting a lot even after going exclusive.

Number 1 is Akari Mitani. It may surprise people, but on AV fees alone she is far ahead.

Before retiring she was exclusive to both Das! and Honnaka, with at least two new titles a month. She also shot VR and other labels, and still kept a steady exclusive output. In a normal month that was 3 to 4 titles.

As a top exclusive, we put her fee at about ¥1,000,000. The real number could be higher, or surprisingly lower.

She barely did other work. She focused on shooting. That is why every title still delivered the intense sex scenes fans paid for.

This one is different. A former national-idol AV actress whose total income may pass ¥100 million.

On total income she should be number 1. This is the industry star, Yua Mikami.

As a former SKE48 member, her debut signing bonus was said to be enough for a used Tokyo apartment. We put her fee at about ¥2,000,000 a title. She does a lot outside AV, so treat this as a reference only.

YouTube and fashion stand out. Her channel passed 1 million subscribers. The upload count is not huge, but cosmetics and other sponsorships should add a lot.

She also founded her own agency and the clothing brand MISTREASS. As a fashion model she has real pull, and she now owns a company. Add it all up and annual income may already be over ¥100 million.

Number 3 is Eimi Fukada. She is one of the industry's most popular names, and she is still active.

Her AV fee is estimated at about ¥2,000,000, and she did 10 titles last year. That alone is strong. She also has over 1.2 million YouTube subscribers, and as an entrepreneur her range is wide.

She launched the intimate-care line Aime Care and the beauty protein Aime Protein. She sells beauty, and also a healthier sex life and body.

Her social following is huge. Influence on that scale means even ¥100 million a year would not shock anyone.

Next is Mana Sakura. Her yearly income should be substantial. On fame she matches or beats the top three, so the money follows.

As an AV actress she has top-tier status. She is exclusive to Soft On Demand, and she has clearly done a lot for the company, so we put her fee at about ¥2,000,000 a title.

The title count is relatively low. Even as an exclusive, she sometimes has months with nothing new. Socials and entertainment work mean total income should still sit in the tens of millions of yen.

She has also published novels and essay collections, with sales said to reach tens of thousands of copies. Some were adapted for film. She is one of the few AV actresses who can live on royalties.

She is a dual exclusive for OPPAI and Premium, and last year alone she put out about 27 titles. Many exclusives take a month off. She seems to be banking it through volume.

We were conservative on the fee: ¥600,000 a title. Recent popularity suggests it could be higher. She is one of the few with a path toward Akari Mitani's level.

Outside AV she does not seem very active. We think she will widen that next year and raise her name. As an actress, the ability is not in doubt.

She also does entertainment work and models for Koakuma Ageha, and she still shot a lot of AV. 18 titles in one year is enough for the list on fees alone.

She is also very popular with female fans. She will get hotter. Jumping to the top would not be a shock.

For those reasons we put her fee at about ¥1,500,000 a title. The yearly count is not high. The fee is what puts her here.

S1 exclusives usually have big social followings. She has over a million on both Twitter and Instagram. That should pay decently too.

In today's industry, especially among exclusives, a small-chested petite actress is rare. That is potential. A girl who gets famous on a flat chest must have other strengths.

She does not seem to run side work that eats the main income. She is genuinely cute, so the market is still there. If she starts managing her career hard, she could jump up the list.

A solo title is a distant dream! Most work is in compilation titles

Exclusive and planning-single names both include "single". Planning actress does not. In short, a planning actress basically does not get solo titles.

The opening is the compilation. A studio gathers about 5 to 15 planning actresses and they share one title.

A compilation still has a lot of sex. It can also be only oral or a handjob. They are not extras. They are credited as actresses.

Some compilations are only changing-room or bath scenes. Depending on the cut, two or three share a scene. Even in a short chapter, a solo appearance can happen.

Sweet romance is rare! Most of this work is niche

Sweet romance is one of the most popular AV genres. NTR has also been hot. Successful actresses almost all do these.

For a planning actress, being picked for a popular genre is rare. Changing-room and bath compilations are only the tip. The real world includes scat, anal, deepthroat, SM, outdoor, and effects titles.

The genres exclusive and popular planning-single actresses avoid are where planning actresses survive. Some get famous by handling those genres easily. Do not underestimate them.

Anonymous or alias shoots are also very common

In planning AV, including compilations, the actress name is often not listed.

Two reasons: the studio wants an amateur feel, or the actress does not want a stage name. Men who like planning AV usually like amateur work too.

For a girl who wants to get famous from planning work, not using her name is a real problem. Sometimes the face is mosaicked too.

The other way around: if she does not want to be identified, staying anonymous is easier.

Personal shoots have sold well in recent years. More studios use FC2 and Pornhub as the main shop. Most of the girls are amateurs, but they sit in the same planning-actress bucket.

Some extras only appear nude, or in light sex scenes

AV has many genres, and many titles need extras.

Many famous names say a street scout found them. If you actually want the job, applying yourself beats waiting. Being discovered is basically a chance meeting.

What you need to do is apply to an agency. Like idols, AV actresses belong to an agency and get work through it. The first move is to contact them.

Applying by messenger (LINE) is now the mainstream

Applications used to be phone or email. Now messaging apps, especially LINE in Japan, are the norm. They are simply easier.

Check each agency's official site. Big companies usually give a QR code or an ID. Add them, then follow the steps.

Phone and email are not dead. Most big-company sites still list phone, email, and LINE. Use whichever suits you.

Before the interview, there is an important photo screen

You will meet the agency eventually. They cannot interview every applicant. There is not enough time.

Applicants are usually asked for photos. At minimum, face and full body. You will be naked on camera later, so be ready to be asked for nude photos.

Only if the photos pass do you move to the next stage.

Each company wants a different type. Pretty, big-breasted, and popular is not an automatic yes. Personality matters here, so everyone has a shot.

You know how to apply. Here are a few major Japanese agencies as concrete places to start.

AV is part of the entertainment business. A strong agency usually means more work, and almost no scam risk. Apply to the big ones with some confidence.

We introduce three. They are among the leaders in Japanese AV. Knowing them will not hurt.

1) T-Powers

First is T-Powers. A large agency. Anyone who watches AV has probably heard the name.

T-Powers was founded in 2001. It started small and expanded. Besides the Tokyo HQ it has offices in Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Sendai. It can take applications from across Japan.

The current roster is full of known names. They all started as near-unknowns. They used the chances and built fame.

If you are confident in your looks, body, or personality, this is a strong pick. Many of their talents are retired AV actresses, so it also suits anyone who wants entertainment work beyond AV.

2) Mine'S

Next is Mine'S. Smaller than T-Powers, but it has many popular actresses, and it seems to support their entertainment careers fully.

Mine'S was founded in 2009, based in Shibuya Mark City. The talents are called Mine'S Girls. They appear together at events and in media. The Mines Paradise events do well every time.

If T-Powers feels glamorous, Mine'S feels pop and casual. It is tightly linked to major AV studios and the wider entertainment business. Become a Mine'S Girl and, with effort, you can have a bright career.

3) EIGHTMAN

Kansai girls are often seen as lively and sexy, and Kansai AV actresses are no exception. The big agency with many of them is EIGHTMAN.

EIGHTMAN is headquartered in Osaka, and now has a Tokyo office too.

As an Osaka-based agency it is strong in that region. Most of its talents have come from Kansai. But S1's Yuko Ono is from Tohoku, and Mei Washio is from Kanagawa. It is not Kansai-only.

Many known actresses are exclusive to a big agency. They can live the same full AV-actress life as Mine'S or T-Powers talent.

Finally, a few important warnings.

So far we have listed the upside. This work has built-in risk. It is not something to enter on a whim. Know this first.

Three main points. Basic, but important. If you are interested in the industry, read them.

With a small agency, the chance of being scammed is high

As EIGHTMAN's own site has noted, besides forced shoots, scams are said to be common in the AV business.

Some of today's top stars and legends entered under semi-forced conditions.

Success after that is luck. Being forced in and ending with nothing is a disaster.

Still common: fees that are too low, unpaid fees, arriving on set and only then learning it is an AV shoot, being pushed into the sex industry, or being pushed into prostitution.

A large AV agency is much less likely to scam you. Talent or not, if you are going in, pick a big agency.

Waiting until you look more polished is also fine

Today's AV actresses are beauties. Some are prettier than idols, with sexier bodies and strong technique. Popularity follows.

A lot of them only look like that after serious styling.

Some get lucky, get famous, then invest in their look. Others, like Eimi Fukada, take time off and come back looking like a different person.

If you feel you are not ready, do not rush in. Improve first.

A pure, innocent look still has charm. Lately many newcomers debut already looking polished, with strong technique. The bar for new faces has risen.

Be ready: it can become your "digital tattoo"

This is something you must know before you start.

Since the internet took over, the AV industry has been fighting illegal uploads.

In recent years more studios have opened official accounts on adult sites and upload previews themselves.

In short, clips being everywhere online is normal now.

That means if you want to be an AV actress, you have to accept a so-called digital tattoo.

Titles come down after a while. Fully disappearing from the internet takes much longer. If you debut, be mentally ready for that.

Succeed as an AV actress and the money can be huge — but only a handful reach the top
